Arabian Nights: White Sands National Park

There is something almost mystical about White Sands National Park in New Mexico. It sets on a long and isolating highway between Alamogordo and Las Cruces New Mexico. The actual park is only a drop in the sand bucket of the white dunes that lay at the foothills of the Oregon Mountains. Visitors to the park really never see the miles and miles of sandy waves. Most of the time the southern New Mexico heat beats down on the dunes making mirages and heat waves rise causing interruptions in your elongated gaze over the horizon. It is truly hard to appreciate the depth of this place. The day we visited the dunes, a light drizzle and fog had overtaken the white sandy skies giving the rolling sandy waves a rarely seen view. Dark rain clouds gave a backdrop to the white dunes which actually made them look more sandy brown, the dunes took on an Arabian night feeling. It was truly a out of the normal experience at White sands that day. These photos give you an idea of the eerie cloudy day, which is the reason I picked these photos for my spotlight of the week.

Happy photos to you - Linda Drake
